Why Is My Hair Getting Thinner as I Get Older?

31/08/2026

One of the most common things we hear behind the chair at Dale James & Co in South Perth is:

“My hair just isn’t as thick as it used to be.”

Hair can change enormously over the years. It may feel finer, have less body, become drier or simply not behave the way it once did.

And while a hairdresser cannot diagnose the cause of hair loss, there is a great deal we can do cosmetically to help fine or thinning-looking hair appear fuller, healthier and more manageable.

Why Does Hair Feel Different as We Get Older?

Hair can change in texture, density and condition throughout our lives.

You may notice that your ponytail feels smaller, your scalp is more visible, your part looks wider or the hair around the front doesn’t feel as dense as it once did.

Sometimes the individual strands themselves simply become finer.

The important thing is that we don’t treat every head of fine hair the same.

Start With the Haircut

This is often overlooked.

When fine hair doesn’t have the right shape, it can actually appear thinner than it is.

Too many layers can remove valuable density from the ends, while hair that is simply left to grow longer and longer can sometimes look flat and sparse.

A beautifully considered haircut can create the illusion of considerably more hair.

Depending on the individual, we may recommend:

a precision bob
a soft concave bob
carefully placed layers
shorter face-framing
movement around the crown
removing damaged, wispy ends
At Dale James & Co, cutting has been at the heart of our salon for more than 50 years.

Dale’s philosophy has always been that the haircut should be designed around the hair in front of you, not simply copied from a photograph.

Colour Can Create the Illusion of Dimension

Colour can also play a role in making fine hair appear fuller.

Rather than one completely flat colour, strategically placed highlights, lowlights or tonal variations can create depth and dimension.

For clients with incoming grey hair, grey blending can sometimes achieve a similar effect while creating a softer transition between natural and coloured hair.

The key is keeping the hair’s condition at the centre of the colour plan.

The Right Styling Products Matter

Fine hair can easily become weighed down.

Heavy products applied too close to the scalp can leave the hair looking flatter — exactly the opposite of what we’re trying to achieve.

Professional volumising products can help create lift and body while allowing the hair to remain touchable.

Our team can recommend products according to your individual hair and scalp needs rather than simply choosing something labelled “volume”.

What About Nioxin?

Nioxin is one of the professional hair and scalp-care ranges we work with at Dale James & Co.

There are different products and systems within the range, so we prefer to recommend them according to the client’s hair and scalp rather than suggesting one product for everyone.

If you’re unsure which products are suitable, ask your stylist during your next appointment.

Could Hair Extensions Help Fine Hair?

This surprises many people.

Hair extensions don’t have to mean very long hair.

For an appropriate client, carefully selected extensions can be used primarily to create fullness and density.

A small amount of additional hair can sometimes make an enormous visual difference to a fine bob, lob or longer style.

The method, weight and placement are extremely important when working with fine hair, which is why professional consultation is essential.

When Should You Speak to a Doctor?

If you notice sudden, unexplained or significant hair loss, bald patches, scalp symptoms, or a major change in your usual hair growth, speak to your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional.

A hairdresser can help with the cosmetic appearance and care of the hair, but we don’t diagnose medical causes of hair loss.

Fine Hair Doesn’t Mean Boring Hair

Some of the most beautiful haircuts we create are on fine hair.

The secret isn’t necessarily trying to make the hair do something it can’t.

It’s about understanding what you’ve got and using cutting, colour, styling and — where appropriate — extensions to make the most of it.

If your hair has changed and your old hairstyle no longer seems to work, it may simply be time for a new approach.
